We will meet you in our Porto bike shop to provide you with a detailed briefing for your tour, hand you over the GPS with preloaded tracks, detailed routebook and all the gear and support.

After the private briefing and bike fit, you can start riding alongside the Douro river on the same day or the next day. The following days you will be riding east towards Entre-os-rios, Resende, Peso da Régua and Pinhão, in the heart of the Douro wine country, where you'll be able to explore this UNESCO world heritage site, before returning to Porto by train alongside the river.

Itinerary

Day 0: Meeting at our warehouse in Porto

Private briefing, bike fit and delivery of bikes and gear for the tour at our Porto bike station;

Day 1: Porto - Entre-os-Rios (40km)

Your ride will start from the Douro's river mouth, Foz do Douro. As you follow the river into Porto's downtown, you'll be able to view Vila Nova de Gaia's picturesque quays and port wine lodges. Continue cycling along the scenic N108, always keeping the Douro River in sight. As you leave the city behind, the route will take you through tranquil riverside villages and lush green landscapes. The road meanders alongside the river, offering stunning views of the water and the surrounding hillsides. Along the N108, you will ride through small villages and verdant countryside, with the Douro River as your constant companion. The gentle rolling hills and serene river views make for a picturesque and enjoyable ride. Approaching Entre-os-Rios, you will cross the historic bridge over the Tâmega River, a tributary of the Douro.

Finally, you will arrive in Entre-os-Rios, a charming town where the rivers Tâmega and Douro converge. Here, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful riverside atmosphere, reflecting on the beautiful journey you've just completed.

Day 2: Entre-os-Rios - Resende (44km);

Start by crossing the historic bridge over the Tâmega River, immediately immersing yourself in the lush scenery of the Douro Valley.Following the N108 road, you'll cycle alongside the Douro River, heading east. The route offers stunning, uninterrupted views of the river, flanked by rolling hills and terraced vineyards. As you leave Entre-os-Rios, you'll pass through small, picturesque villages such as Alpendurada and Torrão, each with its own unique charm and cultural heritage. The path is adorned with greenery and occasional traditional quintas (wine estates), offering perfect spots to take a break and enjoy the local landscape. Continue cycling through this serene environment, where the sound of the river and the rustling leaves create a peaceful atmosphere. Approaching the town of Cinfães, you'll notice the landscape becoming more dramatic with steep, terraced vineyards and rocky outcrops. The village of Cinfães is a great place to pause, perhaps visiting a local café or taking a brief detour to explore the town’s historical sites. Continue your journey along the riverside road, as it winds through more beautiful countryside. The ride offers a blend of gentle hills and flat stretches, making it a moderately challenging yet rewarding experience. As you get closer to Resende, you'll pass by scenic viewpoints and may spot some of the region’s famous cherry orchards.

Upon arriving in Resende, known for its thermal springs and cherry blossoms, you can relax and rejuvenate. The town offers several attractions, including the thermal baths of Caldas de Aregos, which are perfect for unwinding after a day of cycling.

Day 3: Resende - Lamego - Peso da Régua (40km)

Today's route will take you through verdant landscapes, where terraced vineyards and cherry orchards are abundant. This stretch offers peaceful scenery, with the river as your constant companion.

As you pedal eastward, you'll gradually ascend towards the town of Lamego. The climb can be moderately challenging, but the stunning views of the Douro Valley make it worthwhile. Lamego is perched on a hill, known for its baroque architecture and historical significance. Upon arriving in Lamego, visit the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, a stunning baroque church with an impressive staircase of nearly 700 steps. 

After exploring Lamego, continue your ride towards Peso da Régua. The route will take you back down towards the Douro River, following smaller, scenic roads that wind through the vineyards and olive groves.This descent offers spectacular views over the valley and the river below, making for a memorable ride. The road leads you through more charming villages, where you can stop to rest and enjoy the local ambiance.

As you approach Peso da Régua, the landscape becomes more dominated by vineyards, indicative of the region's rich winemaking heritage. Peso da Régua is a key hub in the Douro Valley wine region, known for its port wine production. Arriving in Peso da Régua, you'll find a town that combines modern amenities with traditional charm. The Douro Museum is a great place to learn about the history and culture of the Douro Valley's winemaking. Stroll along the riverfront promenade, where you can see traditional rabelo boats once used for transporting wine barrels.

Day 4: Peso da Régua - Tabuaço - Pinhão (45km);

Leaving Peso da Régua, you'll follow the N222, often regarded as one of the most scenic roads in the world. The route takes you along the Douro River, providing stunning views of terraced vineyards that characterize this UNESCO World Heritage site.

As you cycle eastward, the road begins to ascend, leading you through the charming village of Covelinhas. From here, you'll continue to climb towards Tabuaço, a journey that rewards you with panoramic views of the Douro Valley. The ascent is moderately challenging but is punctuated by the beauty of the vineyards and the Douro River below.

Upon reaching Tabuaço, you'll find a quaint town known for its rich wine culture and historic charm.  Leaving Tabuaço, you will continue on the N323 towards Pinhão. This section of the ride features a mix of gentle descents and rolling hills, with the road winding through more terraced vineyards and olive groves. 

As you descend towards the Douro River, the views become even more breathtaking. The road offers numerous vantage points where you can stop and take in the scenery, capturing the essence of the Douro Valley in your photographs. Approaching Pinhão, you'll cross the Douro River, entering the heart of the Douro wine country. Pinhão is a picturesque village known for its historic railway station adorned with azulejos (ceramic tiles) depicting scenes from the Douro Valley. The town is surrounded by some of the most famous vineyards in the region, making it a perfect place to explore the local wine culture. In Pinhão, you can visit several renowned quintas for wine tastings and tours. The village itself offers a range of dining options where you can enjoy traditional Portuguese cuisine paired with local wines.

Day 5: Pinhão loop (40km)

Start by cycling north out of Pinhão, ascending towards Casal de Loivos. The climb is moderately challenging, but the reward is well worth the effort. After about 5 kilometers, you’ll reach the Miradouro de Casal de Loivos, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Douro Valley. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Douro River winding through terraced vineyards. This is a perfect spot to take a break, capture some stunning photos, and soak in the beauty of the landscape. Continue your ride by heading northwest towards the village of Favaios. The route takes you through rolling hills and picturesque countryside, offering glimpses of the traditional wine-growing region. The road is relatively quiet, providing a peaceful and enjoyable cycling experience.

You'll then arrive in Favaios, a village renowned for its production of Moscatel wine. Take some time to explore Favaios, visiting local wineries and perhaps stopping at the Bread and Wine Museum to learn about the local heritage. Enjoy a leisurely lunch in one of the village’s traditional restaurants, sampling regional dishes and, of course, the famous Moscatel.

From Favaios, begin your descent back towards Pinhão. The ride takes you through more scenic vineyards and charming rural landscapes. The descent is gentle, allowing you to enjoy the views without too much exertion.

Enjoy the rest of your day on a wine tasting experience or visit to a local wine estate;

Day 6: Pinhão-Porto (train);

Check-out at your hotel in Porto and catch the train back to Porto train station (train ticket no included). The scenic train will follow the riverside until you reach Porto.

Yes, you can, as these are private self-guide tours, for you and your group only. These are subject to availability, as we need to check hotel and bike availability for your preferred dates.
We accept bookings for a minimum of 2 guests on our self-guided bike tours.
We require a down payment of 50% of the value of the tour upon booking. The remaining value us due 30 days before the start date of your tour.
No, we specialized in Self-guided tours, where we provide all that is required for you to complete the tour on your own.
Yes, you can. However, if you choose to do so, you must be responsible for the logistics of carrying your own luggage with your bike, as the luggage carrying systems that we use on our bikes might not be able to fit yours.
If you choose to rent one of our bikes, we'll equip them with 2x20litter rear panniers so you can carry your luggage with you from hotel to hotel, as well as a 2.5litter handlebar bag. We do not operate external luggage transfers services, but we can recommend companies that do that.
The briefing, bike fit and handing over all the information and gear for the tour is done at our Bike Stations in Porto and Lisbon. Our guides will meet you and provide you with a detailed routebook, suggestions and all you need to complete your tour. This briefing can be scheduled for the day before you start the tour (this is our recommendation) or even in the same day that you want to start your ride.
We accept payment via Paypal and any other major credit/debit cards. Payment for all tours and rentals are made entirely upon booking, and online.
If you need to cancel or change your bike tour to unexpected circumstances, our cancellation policy follows below:

Bike tour cancellation requested 120 days before tour:
100% of the value payed is refunded;

Bike tour cancellation requested between 119 to 90 days:
60% of the value payed is refunded;

Bike tour cancellation requested between 89 to 30 days:
50% of the value payed is refunded;

Bike tour cancellation requested 29 days, or less, before the tour:
No refunds;
